Physical Education (PE)

At Hinchley Wood Primary School, our PE curriculum aims to give pupils an understanding of their own physical health and the positive impact it can have on their overall well-being. All pupils experience a wide variety of sports and skills to instil a life-long interest in physical activity.

Our extensive school facilities enable us to deliver high quality sessions, this includes; an indoor hall, an astro turf pitch, a multi-use games area, two playgrounds and a field. Pupils take part in at least 2 hours of PE each week delivered by their class teacher and specialist coaches from Hinchley Wood Secondary School. Teachers use the Get Set 4 PE scheme to deliver a rich and varied offer of sports to pupils.

The scheme comprises of the following:

1. Indoor PE- Pupils learn skills through dance and gymnastics to become competent and confident in movement, agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Pupils learn about mindfulness and body awareness through yoga.

2. Outdoor PE- Through participation in outdoor games such as football, hockey, netball, handball, rugby, cricket, tennis, rounders, badminton and athletics, pupils will learn a variety of skills and play in team games. We also have an orienteering course that children use across the curriculum to improve their co-operation and team building skills whilst also providing physical and mental challenge.

Swimming

Children in Year 3 take part in a 10-week swimming programme at Hurst Pool.

Extra-Curricular Clubs and Competitions

At Hinchley Wood Primary we offer many sporting clubs, both before and after school. These include ballet, netball, football, multi-sports, street dance, gymnastics, judo, tennis and cricket.

We are part of the EDPSSA (Esher District Sports Schools Partnership Association) which comprises of 13 local schools. This enables us to connect with other schools and participate in a wide range of sport festivals and events including netball and football leagues and annual cross country. We ensure that pupils are given the opportunity to participate in local tournaments whilst also running our own intra-class competitions that target pupils of all abilities. We strongly believe that PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach pupils to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.

Active Play

We aim for children to be active for at least 1 hour per day either through outdoor learning, PE or active play. To provide further opportunities, structured games have been set up at lunchtimes to ensure purposeful physical activity is happening across our play zones. We have a Year 5 and 6 Sports Crew and a Wellbeing Ambassador team that deliver varied activities to individual year groups. We also offer other activities to the pupils across our site including table tennis, climbing, traversing, skipping and bowling. Pupils also enjoy access to the MUGA and astro courts which can be used for football, basketball and tennis during break and lunch time.
