YEAR 6: SHACKLETON'S JOURNEY
At the beginning of Spring term, Year 6 were introduced to a new Power of Reading text; Shackleton’s Journey (based on the true story of Ernest Shackleton – an Antarctica explorer in the 1910s).
We began by exploring the crew members on board and found out that Ernest Shackleton hired 26 people out of 5,000 who applied. We first created a fact file for a chosen character aboard the ship Endurance. Then we planned and wrote a CV for this character too. The children then interviewed each other; one person was Shackleton and the other a crew member. The kids loved this and really got in-role!
We then went on to explore the hardships that the crew faced on their journey and Year 6 wrote their own poems on the surrounding landscape and the accompanying feeling of isolation.
These poems were so fantastic that they have now been displayed on one of the boards in the Year 6 corridor! (See attached photo).
It’s safe to say that Year 6 are thoroughly enjoying learning about Ernest Shackleton and his journey to Antarctica!
